Two new two-story science and general classroom buildings

Overview

  • 10 science laboratory classrooms and 8 general classrooms with flexible layouts to accommodate 583 students. Includes 6 new restrooms.
  • Buildings were designed to meet CHPS standards; the project integrated energy efficient shading, lighting, and mechanical control systems.
  • A defining school entryway includes a digital marquee and landscape enhancements. Central courtyard space with personalized donation bricks offers a welcoming environment.

History/Rationale

  • First significant improvements to site in 15 years.
  • Additional student capacity was needed due to growth. 2017-18 enrollment of area of residence was 2,398 with capacity of 2,075 (excluding modular and leased portable classrooms).

Key Project Successes

The scheduled occupancy date was threatened by a significant PG&E delay. In response, we installed a temporary generator, allowing mechanical start-up and commissioning to occur prior to receiving permanent power. As a result, students moved into the new space on schedule.

Nov 18, 2015 — Approve the plan and budget for additional classrooms for 2016-17 and Adopt Resolution No. 008-1516 authorizing Design-Build as method of delivery for permanent classrooms construction; return by the end of January 2016 for approval.

Amount: $33,100,000 (Fund 21 Measure E Bond Program for $32.5 million and Fund 25 Developer Fees for $0.6 million).

 

Jan 13, 2016 — Authorize Staff to Amend Existing Agreement for Construction Management Services for Series A and B Bond Projects for O'Connor Construction Management, Inc. and Roebbelen Inc. (This included the classroom addition project at American High School for Roebbelen.)

Amount: $558,217.80 budgeted CM fees. (Fund 21 Measure E Bond Program).

 

Jan 30, 2016 — Authorize staff to enter into an agreement for Design-Build services for Classroom Addition Projects at Brookvale Elementary, Patterson Elementary, and American High School to be funded by Measure E, Series B Bond in the amount of $27,263,335 ($26,985,335 + $278,000), and approve reallocation of the budget among the three (3) sites and allocate an additional $400,000 to cover the overall budget deficit.

Apr 13, 2016 — Approve additional funds in order to add restrooms to the new classroom wing at American High School.

Aug 17, 2016 — Authorize staff to enter into an agreement with Smith-Emery for material testing laboratory and special inspection services for the American High School Classroom Addition Project.

Aug 17, 2016 — Authorize staff to enter into an agreement with DSA School Inspectors, Inc. for the Project Inspector (PI), previously referred to as Inspector of Record (IOR), for the American High School Classroom Addition Project.

Jul 26, 2017 — Receive an Update on the American High School Modernization Project. After receiving comments and feedback from the Board, staff will revise the options, if necessary, and return to the Board at the August 23, 2017 Board meeting for further consideration, direction and/or approval.

 

Dec 13, 2017 — Authorize staff to enter into an agreement with Waters Moving & Storage, Inc. for moving services for the American High School new classroom project.

Amount: $19,118 (Fund 21 Measure E Bond Program).

 

Aug 22, 2018 — Authorize staff to execute the final change order with Rodan Builders, Inc. (Rodan) for the new construction project at American High School (AHS), file a notice of completion (NOC), and amend the agreement with Smith-Emery for material testing and special inspection services.

Amount: -$86,115 (Fund 21 Measure E Bond Program Savings).
