On November 4, 2022, Mattos Elementary hosted the Elementary Soccer Special Olympics for the Mission Valley Special Education Local Plan Area (MVSELPA), which includes schools in Fremont, Newark and New Haven unified school districts.

The student athletes did an amazing job of participating in the spirit of the Special Olympics athlete oath: "Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt."

Students from many FUSD schools competed, and their teachers, paraeducators and many other supporters came out to cheer and enjoy the games.

The students and staff of Mattos Elementary were outstanding hosts; they created signs that hung around the school and they lined the pathway from the entry to the field so they could cheer on the athletes as they arrived.

Community partners also came out to support, including local education and elected leaders, and Chief Curtis Jacobson and other firefighters from the Fremont Fire Department.

The Cheer Team and band from John F. Kennedy High School did a great job of bringing energy and entertainment to the event.
The Secondary Soccer Special Olympics games will be held November 18 at American High School.
