At its October 20th meeting, the FUSD Board of Education:
4.1 Determined To Reconsider Adoption of Resolution 016-2122, A Resolution In Support of Afghan Refugees and The People of Afghanistan
During its October 13, 2021 meeting, the Board voted 3-2 to approve Resolution 016-2122, A Resolution In Support of Afghan Refugees and The People of Afghanistan. Following this vote, a Board member who had not voted in favor of the Resolution asked that the Board reconsider the item to allow for another vote on the Resolution.
Pursuant to Board Bylaw 9322, any Board member may request that a matter within the jurisdiction of the Board be placed on the agenda. However, the same Board Bylaw indicates that the Board may only reconsider an item previously considered or review a previous Board action, with the agreement of the majority of the Board.
The Board voted 4-1 to reconsider the Resolution during the following agenda item.
4.2 Reconsidered and Adopted Resolution 016-2122, A Resolution In Support of Afghan Refugees and The People of Afghanistan
The Fremont Unified School District supports and welcomes refugees from Afghanistan into our community and calls upon our residents, community leaders, businesses, faith-based organizations, and community-based organizations to welcome and support these Afghan families to achieve their inherent right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
Trustees discussed the need and calls from community members for FUSD to prepare and provide support for refugee students and their families.
The Board unanimously adopted Resolution 016-2122, A Resolution of the Fremont Unified School District In Support of Afghan Refugees and The People of Afghanistan.
Superintendent CJ Cammack noted that FUSD is proactively planning and working to ensure FUSD is ready to support Afghan refugees in our school community, and FUSD is providing support to other districts on this topic. Staff can bring report to Board about the work done, further plans and support in place. Acknowledged the work done to date by Assistant Superintendent Leticia Salinas, Director of Federal and State Programs Christie Rocha and other staff.
The Board’s next Regular Meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, October 27, 2021 at 6:30pm (time subject to change)
