Hello FUSD Staff, Students, and Community,

Thank you to all the staff and community members who reached out to offer me such a warm welcome to Fremont Unified School District. I am thrilled to be serving as your Superintendent and look forward to building collaborative and meaningful relationships throughout our schools and our entire community. Please join me in thanking Dr. Raúl Zamora for his thoughtful and consistent leadership over the past five months as Acting Superintendent. Thank you, Dr. Zamora, for your continued commitment to FUSD.

In a non-pandemic environment, I’d be filling my calendar with face-to-face meetings while traveling to all our schools to see the great work of our staff and students. As we know all too well, these times are anything but normal. Nonetheless, amidst an unprecedented start to the school year, I remain focused on establishing these meaningful relationships, even if through a digital medium, and I look forward to sharing some screentime with many of you soon. I’ll still be making visits to our school sites to visit facilities and perhaps I’ll have the chance to meet in person, from an appropriate social distance.

I am very pleased to share with you that FUSD and FUDTA have reached an agreement on a comprehensive MOU related to starting the 2020-2021 school year in a distance learning model. Both FUSD and FUDTA worked diligently and collaboratively to finalize the parameters of our 2020-2021 distance learning program. The agreement, pending board approval on August 12th,  ensures FUSD’s compliance with all state mandates for daily instructional minutes and synchronous daily instruction for all students. At the same time, it provides flexibility for educators as professionals to meet the various needs of the students in their virtual classrooms and schools. I am very pleased to see the joint commitment to provide all FUSD students a rigorous and supportive distance learning instructional program.

In the coming days, our community will receive additional information from FUSD regarding the overall distance learning program for all students, specific platforms for online instruction, and many other important details. I recognize the need for this information to be provided in a timely manner and want to ensure our community receives a comprehensive summary so that staff, students, and families can properly prepare for our first day of school on August 26th.

As a former classroom teacher and principal, I empathize with how challenging these moments are for all educators and support staff, including our classified employees and administrators. Working together, I am very confident we will deliver a comprehensive high-quality educational program for ALL our students.

As a father of two school-aged children, ages 13 and 10, I fully understand the concerns of parents/guardians as it relates to a comprehensive high-quality educational program via distance learning and remote instruction. Over the past week, I’ve carefully reviewed the many FUSD parent/guardian emails related to such concerns. Thank you for taking the time to provide your input and advocacy.

As the rich history of FUSD and the incredible diversity of Fremont come to life at the start of this school year, we are provided the continued opportunity to carefully review our practices, procedures, systems, and actions, to analyze if we are normalizing equality and to analyze gaps or systematic failure to ensure equitable educational access/outcomes for all students. With every interaction and meeting in the coming days and weeks, I look forward to learning about the history and the amazing people of FUSD,  that weave together the fabric of our Fremont Unified culture. I am confident there will be so many positive things to celebrate about FUSD and that we can also focus on areas to improve as well. I’ll remain focused on how we can build higher levels of excellence for our students by creating higher levels of equity for all students and staff. The opportunities and challenges ahead are monumental opportunities to rebuild the future our children deserve.

I look forward to meeting each of you in person, as soon as it is possible. Until then, please know that I’ll be working with passion, intensity, and a sharp focus on success for all FUSD students.
