Board Meeting Highlights - May 8, 2019

At its May 8th meeting, The FUSD Board of Education:

 

Approved Three Administrative Appointments (All positions are effective July 1st, 2019):

  • Zack Larsen, Director of Secondary Education:  Mr. Larsen has been with Fremont Unified since 1999.  He began his career as an elementary school teacher at Gomes Elementary.  Mr. Larsen took his first administrative position as an Assistant Principal at Mission San Jose High School.  He was later promoted to Vice Principal at Mission San Jose High School and most recently, has served as the Principal of MSJHS since 2013.
  • Robin Sehrt, Director of Elementary EducationMs. Sehrt has worked for the Newark, Dublin and Pleasanton School District's as an elementary teacher prior to taking on an administrative role.  Ms. Sehrt was employed for two years as an Elementary Vice Principal and ten years as an Elementary Principal.  Currently, Ms. Sehrt is the Director of Special Projects in Newark Unified.
  • Jacki Sprague, Fremont Adult School Assistant PrincipalDr. Sprague started her career as a math teacher at James Logan High School.  She came to Fremont in 2007 as a school counselor at Kennedy High School.  For the past four years, Dr. Sprague has served as a Program Coordinator at Mission Valley ROP. 

 

Approved Tentative Agreements between Fremont Unified School District and the Fremont Unified District Teachers Association - Fremont Unified School District and Fremont Unified Teachers Associated reached tentative agreements which were ratified as of April 17, 2019, for the following Articles that include:

  • Article 24: Salaries

   2018-2019 school year:

  • 1.00% increase on the salary schedule, effective July 1, 2018.
  • 1.50% increase on the salary schedule, effective January 1, 2019.
  • 1.50% off-schedule payment based on the January 2, 2019, salary schedule. 

   2019-2020 school year:

  • 1.00% increase on the salary schedule, effective July 1, 2019. 
  • 1.50% increase on the salary schedule, effective January 1, 2020.
  • 1.50% off-schedule payment based on the January 2, 2020, salary schedule.

 

Held Public Hearing on the Preliminary Environmental Assessment Report for the Proposed School Site at the Early Education Center Located at 43100 Isle Royal Street (Rix site) – The Board held a required public hearing on the Preliminary Environmental Assessment (PEA) Report for the proposed school site at the early education center located at 43100 Isle Royal Street (the Rix site). The District previously submitted the PEA report to the California Environmental Protection Agency Department of Toxic Substances Control for review. No potentially harmful chemicals were detected in the soil and no further studies are required for the site. Supporting documents can be found here.

 

Received Report from the Preschool (Rix School) Renaming Task Force, Hold Public Hearing, and Make a Selection from the Recommended List of Names - A renaming task force committee was formed in October 2018 with its first meeting of members occurring on December 4, 2018. Team members voted and finalized three recommendations which will be presented to the Board.

Received Mission Valley ROP Career Technical Education Presentation

 

Received Presentation on New Elementary Report Cards 2019-20 - Throughout the 2018-19 school year, teacher leaders and administrators from each elementary school attended five professional development sessions focused on standards-based teaching and reporting. At each elementary school, site administrators scheduled a report card presentation for parents and guardians in spring 2019. The presentation module was created by district staff, ensuring standardization across all schools. District staff received training from Illuminate Education in February 2019 and built the new report cards in Illuminate. The professional development will consist of further practice with standards-based teaching and reporting as well as training on the use of Illuminate's grading features. See presentation here.

 

Received Information on Construction of Lila Bringhurst Elementary School and Determine the Minimum Enrollment Required to Open School - The Board approved an enrollment threshold of approximately 160 students for the opening of the new Bringhurst Elementary School. If that enrollment number is not reached in time to open the school this fall, then the school would open the following school year once that threshold is reached. While the building is nearly complete and would be ready for occupancy this fall, developers report the construction and sale of the residences has been delayed due to inclement weather and problems with the connection of utilities. This has resulted in very low occupancy of the residences and, consequently, a low enrollment projection for 2019-20.

 

Authorized Staff to Enter into an Agreement for Design-Build Services for the Proposition 39 Light Emitting Diode (LED) Lighting Replacement Project - The Board authorized staff to enter into an agreement with Clear Blue Energy Corporation in the amount of $3,509,538 for design-build services for the Proposition 39 LED lighting replacement project. By replacing all interior and exterior lighting, the District will realize an estimated annual cost savings of $476,040 from the General Fund.

Board approves by 4-1 vote (Trustee Campbell votes Nay).

 

Approved Adoption of the Anatomy and Physiology Textbook - Based on agreed upon course and student outcomes, teachers selected two texts for closer review:

  • Principles of Anatomy and Physiology - 15th Edition, (2016) by Gerard J. Tortora, Bryan H. Derrickson, Publisher: Wiley
  • Hole’s Human Anatomy and Physiology - 15th Edition (2019) by David N. Shier Dr., Jackie L. Butler, Ricki Lewis Dr., Publisher: McGraw-Hill Education

 

Approved School Mascot and Mascot Colors for Carmen R. Meléndez Elementary School - Using information previously solicited from the community and the outreach efforts coordinated by the Spanish Immersion New School Taskforce Committee as background, District staff worked with a graphic design consultant to create three mascot design options and four school mascot color options for the Board's consideration and vote.

The Board’s next Regular Meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, May 22nd, 6:00pm (time subject to change), at the District Office Board Room – 4210 Technology Dr. – in Fremont.
